A Kentucky Derby tradition since, 1938.

History tells us the United States, Senator Henry Clay of Kentucky introduced the drink to Washington, D.C., at the Round Robin Bar in the famous Willard Hotel during his residence in the city.

Although the Mint Julep has been around since the eighteenth century and the Kentucky Derby started in 1875. The minty cocktail was not associated with the Kentucky Derby till 1938. Each year over 100,000 juleps is served at Churchill Downs over the two-day period of the Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby, all of them served in specially made Kentucky Derby collectible glasses.

In a contract arrangement between the Brown-Forman Corporation and Churchill Downs that has lasted more than 18 years.  Early Times Whiskey Mint Julep Cocktail was the designated "official mint julep of the Kentucky Derby". Although Early Times is sold within the United States and is a Kentucky whiskey, it's not bourbon. The difference between whiskey and bourbon has to do with how the spirit was aged. However, in some countries, the distilling process determines a straight whiskey, whiskey scotch or a whiskey bourbon. Whiskey is aged in used barrels and bourbon is aged in new oak barrels. In order to make a Kentucky Derby Mint Julep, bourbon whiskey is a key ingredient. In 2015, Old Forester, which is also produced by Brown-Forman Corporation, is now "the official drink of the Kentucky Derby," when sold as Old Forester Mint Julep Ready-to-Serve Cocktail. There are definitely other Kentucky bourbons on hand at Churchill Downs for this delightful cocktail. Such as a few fan favorites Maker’s Mark, Jim Beam and the official sponsored bourbon for the Kentucky Derby, Kentucky's Woodford Reserve.

If you are truly are wanting a Kentucky Derby experience always drink a Mint Julep at Churchill Downs.
